U12 & U16 Girls Trip to Manchester – Easter 2007

Glounthaune United Girls had a busy Easter period. They travelled to Manchester and represented Glounthaune with pride.

On the opening day of the tournament April 7th, the U12 Team defeated Johnsville Waterford 6 – 0, Jayne Bruen scoring four goals one each for Angie Carry and Emer Gilroy. This was followed by a 4 – 1 win over Oldham with Jayne Bruen scoring another three goals and one from Clodagh Lane. Blackpool defeated Glounthaune in the third game by 2 – 0.

On Sunday the side drew with Manchester City who subsequently won the Manchester Cup and in the Challenge Cup Final drew with English side Thornton Cleaverleys. The teams were still level after extra time so on to penalties. It looked good when Glounthaune were 3 – 2 ahead but then matters ended in very controversial circumstances. Emer Gilroy hit the crossbar and the ball then struck the keeper on the head and ended up in the net. Emer celebrated but the English referee disallowed the goal “because the ball came off the bar?. However, the rule clearly states one movement as was the case in the 2004 European Championship when the goal stood. However further disappointment followed when the second sudden death well struck penalty by Ciara Barry was “scored? but again the referee disallowed it “because the whole ball did not cross the line?. The girls were of course disappointed and Glounthaune United U12 Girls had to finish with runners up trophies. This was indeed a great achievement.

The U16 Girls Team had three games on the opening day. The suffered a 2 – 0 defeat to Bolton and lost 1 – 0 to Blackburn whilst they defeated Stalybridge 2 – 1. On the second day the side lost to Manchester City and drew with Wigan. There was also of course a social aspect to the trip with the usual marathon shopping sprees at the Arndale and Trafford Centres and a visit to the famous Opera House for “Fame The Musical?. A visit to the famous Old Trafford Museum was also popular.

The very weary travelling party arrived back at the “Tree? at 11.00am on Tuesday the 10th April.
